Ibn Abbas narrates that the colour of the Prophet’s flag was green and of standard white. During the battle of Badr, three different banners however were used; the bigger one was in the hands of Ali bin Abu Talib, containing the symbol of an eagle (ukab), representing the force of the Muhajirin. In this connection, Nasir Khusaro (1003-1088) writes in his couplets (vide “Nasir-i Khusraw Forty Poems from the Divan” tr. By P.L. Wilson )

Green comes up a lot in Islamic history. It was the color of the flag of the Fatimid Caliphate, the last of the four Arab caliphates. During the crusades, Islamic soldiers wore green to identify themselves. (Likewise, crusaders avoided green in their coats of arms, just to be safe from friendly fire.) Some say the banner under which Mohammed fought in the war on Mecca was green with golden trimming. (The flag is currently locked away in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Turkey—we don’t really know what color it is.) For centuries in Persia, only descendants of Mohammed, known as the Sayyids, were allowed to wear green turbans—anyone else would be punished for it. Green was also favored by the Ottoman Empire, which after the Tanzimat reforms of the mid-19th century dyed its secular flags red and its religious flags green. More recently, the color has become associated with Hamas, which sports a bright green flag.

Mansyur menegaskan bendera Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam berwarna Merah Putih seperti yang ditulis oleh Imam Muslim dalam Kitab Al-Fitan, Jilid X, halaman 340. Dari Hamisy Qasthalani,

Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam Bersabda: “Innallaha zawaliyal ardha masyaariqaha wa maghariba ha wa a’thonil kanzaini Al-Ahmar wal Abjadh”.

Artinya: “Allah menunjukkan kepadaku (Rasul) dunia. Allah menunjukkan pula timur dan barat. Allah menganugerahkan dua perbendaharaan kepadaku: Merah Putih”.

Informasi ini didapat Mansyur dari buku berjudul Kelengkapan Hadits Qudsi yang dibuat Lembaga Alquran dan Al-Hadits Majelis Tinggi Urusan Agama Islam Kementerian Waqaf Mesir pada 1982, halaman 357-374. Buku ini dalam versi bahasa Indonesia dengan alih bahasa oleh Muhammad Zuhri.
